Busy Day Today

Still working on Futuristic Motherhood stuff, I had planned to be done this past weekend but other things got in the way. Sending out the email to the other writers today though! It’s extremely frustrating to me that this is taking so long, so I can only imagine how they feel. In other news I got invited to help start a local writing group. I had to decline because my time is over scheduled as it is, but I will participate as much as I can by going to a meeting at least once a month. They are planning to meet once a week! Who has time for that? not me. But I am excitied about getting to know other writers close to me.

Manifesting My Dreams: Workshop

I’m big into manifesting my dreams, making my ideas real tangible things and happenings in my life. One thing I’ve been wanting to do for a while is conducting an annual workshop for writers that’s focused on using life experience in fiction and non-fiction writing. I want it to be class-room style for part of it but also interactive-style, with lots of dynamic movement and involvement from folks participating. I need to flesh this idea out more, then find a spot and start the ball rolling on this. yeah!

Sci-fi Writing Groups: Where Are the Women?

Well the only other woman in my offline sci-fi writing group moved away. Originally there were 5 of us out a group of 17. Over time people joined, left, re-joined, new members, etc. but as each woman left she was replaced by a man. Where are the women sci-fi writers? Even online writing groups seem to be dominated by men. I feel a little weird being the only woman in the group, but I know the guys and feel comfortable talking being friends as well as writing associates. I’m gonna try to get more women to join though.

How about you, what’s your experience? If you are part of science fiction writing groups either online or off, what’s the male:female ratio? Do you think it matters?

Submitting to a Workshop

I’m really considering submitting a story or 2 to a workshop or retreat that focuses on science fiction. I have 11 good stories done and I thought about publishing them in a book rather then submitting them to various magazines and what not, but then I decided to do it, what is to me, the hard way. Some I think are perfect which means they need tons of editing, others I think suck which means I need to start them again from scratch. Not very adventurous I’m afraid!

On another note my sci-fi writing group is breaking up for a variety of reasons…I’d like to join or start another one. This means I’d have to meet new people. This is always a challenge for me as I can get all weird and socially phobic and act strange around people who don’t know me and/or are not used to my strangeness. It’s so hard to have to rein myself in, but I must admit, meeting Mercury can be an overwhelming experience.
